FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

See common questions and answers below:

  • Q: How do I decide whether to have wallpaper or paint ?

It will ultimately depend on your own preference and taste. Wallpaper's advantage is that because of its non porous and more solid surface, it looks neater for a longer time than paint does. Also, it's easier to change from wallpaper to paint when you are not satisfied with the colour as you can just put new wallpaper over the old one.

From the other hand, paint is easier to repair as you just repaint the furniture or even the wall itself if it's bad. Also, paint looks brighter and fresher than wallpaper because it reflects lights more easily. However, paint will show marks faster and dust easily on a porous surface which is why a smooth surface like wood will work much better for a paint.

  • Q: What are the benefits of using wallpaper ?

Firstly, wallpaper lets you experiment with colours and patterns in your room as it comes in different patterns and designs. Also, because of its relatively smooth surface you can move it around much easier to reposition or remove it when you decide that you don't like the design anymore.

  • Q: Is wallpaper very difficult to remove from the wall ?

It should be a relatively quick and easy job to remove wallpaper from the wall. The main difficulty is when you live in an older house as the wallpaper could have been applied decades ago so it may require more effort to peel it off. Also, some old types of paper can leave a sticky residue on your wall that will need to be cleaned up.

However, if you use newer paper it should not be too hard as long as the wallpaper is in a good condition. You can use water, vinegar or even steam to soften up the paste and then just scrape or peel off the paper from the surface.

Just make sure that you have covered any large furniture with plastic to prevent any stains or damage. Also, if you have wallpaper behind your furniture, it will be easier to take it off from the back side as you can just remove the paper and leave the tape in place so that is less of a hassle.

  • Q: Can wallpapers be painted over ?

Yes they can but with varying degrees of success because paint does not stick to wallpaper as well as it sticks on a bare surface.

You can repaint the walls and leave the pattern of the paper showing if it's not too big or noticeable. This way, you don't even have to bother taking off your wallpaper. However, this will not always work because paint does not stick well to all types of papers and especially thick ones.

  • Q: Do I need to prime the wall before installing wallpaper ?

Priming the walls will depend on how big or visible the pattern is. If it's very small, then you may not need to prime as the texture of the surface itself will be enough to hold onto the glue. However, for a bigger pattern, then you will have to priming and even painting your wall with a light colour especially if it's a dark pattern.

The main purpose of priming is to give the paper a smooth surface for it to stick firmly onto. It also helps in hiding any possible flaws in your wall such as cracks or paint spatters so you won't have to worry about those showing through your wallpaper.

  • Q: Are there different types of wallpaper ?

There are two main types of wallpaper. Firstly, there is the traditional paper which is made from silk and its traditional counterpart cotton paper. This type of paper is relatively flexible but will not be able to hold its shape well so it's best used for very small patterns such as flowers or simple stripes on walls.

Secondly, there is vinyl paper which is made from plastic and it's much more durable than traditional paper. Vinyl paper is also very thin and can be applied to almost any smooth surface like wood, paint or plasterboard walls. It will last longer but you do have to take extra care of it as detailed in the next section.

  • Q: Can I install wallpaper by myself ?

Yes, you can do so. But firstly, the wallpaper beneath should be in good condition and be removed from your wall thoroughly (including all left over residue). Secondly, you have to take another layer of paper to cover up the old one because it will not work well with only a single layer. It will look messy and ugly so find a wallpaper that is in the same colour palette or one which is a similar pattern so that it will look like a new wall.

  • Q: How do I know how much wallpaper I need ?

You can easily measure this by measuring the distance of your wall and then multiplying it by how many times you want to repeat a pattern. For instance, if you have a large ceiling that is 10 metres long and 2 metres wide then that's 20m². You plan on having at least two lines of wallpaper with an average length of one metre each then that means you will need 20 x 2 = 40 metres of wallpaper (which is enough).

If it's a bigger pattern, then just do the same process by multiplying the measurement of your wall by how many times you want to repeat the pattern. I would recommend to buy more than what you think that you'll need just in case. You can always use what's over for an extra feature in your room such as applying one long piece along a wall or covering up a bigger imperfection on the wall.

  • Q: Can I repair a small tear in my wallpaper ?

Yes you can but it will require a special type of glue and patience. Start by cutting out the part where the tear is on a piece of paper like below.

Then, wash off all the dirt or dust from your wall with soap and water using a sponge to do so.

If there's any excess dried up glue then scrub them off with a scrubbing brush.

Lastly, apply glue along the line of the tear and press it firmly onto your wall using a hammer or anything hard enough to do so. Then leave it for about an hour (or up to overnight if possible) until it's dry and then you're good to go !
