Wallpaper glue and wallpaper paste are the same things. The paste exists underneath the first layer of the wallpaper and the paper backing. You must remove the paste from the wall because it can affect fresh paint on the wall. The paste can dry and crackle under a layer of paint, causing it to bubble and peel off.
To clean the paste off the wall, use your putty knife to scrape while you continue to wet the wall. If the paste doesn't come off easily, you can try using a gel stripper to spray the area and leave it for 10-15 minutes. Afterward, scrape with your putty knife until the wall doesn't feel sticky anymore.
Then, rinse the walls with warm water to remove any residue of gel stripper or even tiny spots of paste that may still be on the wall. After completing the removal job, you will need to prep the wall for fresh paint or if you plan on installing another wallpaper. You can do this by patching holes or gouges with a sparkling paste and a putty knife. Then sand the patch area for a smooth wall.
